The Space Above and Between and Inside Series written statement

Being Puerto Rican growing up in suburban North Jersey and commuting to family in NYC, Miami, and Puerto Rico, I learned to look to the sky. On my commutes, through airplane windows and city streets, I was drawn to the intense subtle feeling in the sky's variety of forms that followed me to every place I traveled to. The sky became a means of connecting me to everyone, wherever I was.

The intense feelings experienced in nature are something I turned to watercolor painting to desperately resolve and express–to feel and understand deeper.  I seek to make vibrant light-filled spaces, and translate the sublime with light and atmosphere.

The media used was quick and accessible. I let my brush width, impression of the sky, the paint flowing with water, and the color palette, inform where the strokes go. The paintings have taught me through life we learn and grow and die, ultimately feeding the forward-moving presence of the now, of the love above.

The series became a mode of shamanic healing for me; I hope for them to offer solace and a loving inward-outward perspective for anyone who views them. The series taught me that with mindful action the miraculous can coincide. The painting series has offered me a newfound appreciation for the abstract nature of the sky, and of the landscapes that surround us everywhere.
